WHEN SOMEONE ELSE’S ANGER BECOMES YOUR BURDEN

Proverbs 27:3 (NKJV) says … “A stone is heavy and sand is weighty; But a fool’s wrath is heavier than both of them.”

There are some burdens in life that we were never meant to be carried by us.

A stone is heavy. Sand is weighty. I think we all know what it feels like to carry something that is physically very heavy. Here, Solomon is telling us that there is something even heavier—the wrath of a foolish person!

You may wonder why that is so—why is it so heavy?

Because when someone is determined to remain angry, offended or unreasonable, their anger can become a burden that seems to have no end.
  • You can explain yourself.

  • You can apologise.

  • You can try to reason.

  • You can speak gently.

  • You can even try to make peace.

  • And yet, the other person has already decided that they will not listen.

This is where discernment becomes so important.
  • Not every argument deserves our response.

  • Not every accusation requires an explanation.

  • Not every angry person needs to be convinced.

Sometimes the wisest thing we can do is to walk away from the argument.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this—there were times when He answered people, and there were times when He remained silent. He understood that silence can sometimes speak louder than words.

That doesn't mean we become cold or uncaring. It simply means that we recognise we cannot reason with someone who has no desire to receive wisdom.

Be careful what you pick up.

Proverbs 26:17 (NKJV) says … “He who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a dog by the ears.”

Imagine someone handing you a heavy stone and say, “Carry this for me.”

You might ask, “Why should I?”

Yet spiritually, we often do exactly that.

  • Someone becomes angry with us, and we pick up their anger.

  • Someone misunderstands us, and we carry their misunderstanding.

  • Someone speaks against us, and we carry their words around in our minds.

  • Someone refuses to forgive, and we carry their unforgiveness.

Before long, we are exhausted—not because of what God has asked us to carry, but because we have picked up burdens that belong to someone else!

We must LEARN THE DIFFERENCE between having compassion for someone's struggle and carrying the weight of their behaviour—especially if they do not want to receive Godly council or correction.

  • You can love someone without entering their chaos.

  • You can pray for someone without arguing with them.

  • You can forgive someone without continually exposing yourself to their anger.

  • You can speak the truth without fighting to make someone accept it.

And sometimes, walking away is not weakness—walking away is wisdom.

Guard your spirit

Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) says … “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”

There is another important lesson here.

  • A foolish person's anger can tempt us to become like them.

  • Their anger can provoke our anger.

  • Their harsh words can make us respond with harsh words.

  • Their bitterness can draw bitterness out of us.

And suddenly, we have entered a battle that God never asked us to fight.

  • We don't have to match someone's volume.

  • We don't have to return insult for insult.

  • We don't have to prove that we can fight just because someone else wants to fight.

There is tremendous strength in saying: “I will not allow your anger to determine my behaviour.”

Know when to speak—and know when to be silent!

God has called us to walk in wisdom, love, grace and truth.

TODAY, perhaps there is someone whose anger (wrath) you have been carrying for a while now. Perhaps you have replayed their words over and over in your mind. Perhaps you are exhausted from trying to make someone understand reason. Perhaps you have been carrying a burden that God never placed on your shoulders.

Today, you can put it down ...

You can say: “Lord, I give this person to You. I give You their anger, their words, their opinions and their actions. Help me to respond with wisdom, protect my heart from bitterness, and give me discernment to know when to speak and when to remain silent.”

Remember ...

A stone may be heavy. Sand may be weighty. But someone else's anger does not have to become your burden.

Guard your heart. Walk in wisdom. And let the Lord fight the battles, and carry the burden that you were never meant to fight nor carry!

That is why Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:29 (NKJV) … “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls”

Prayer

Father, give me wisdom and discernment in all relationships. Help me to know when to speak, when to be silent, when to confront and when to walk away. Keep me from being drawn into arguments that produce nothing but hurt and division. Guard my hearts from bitterness, anger and resentment. Help me to love those around me without carrying burdens that don’t belong to me. Give me grace to forgive, courage to establish healthy boundaries, and wisdom to leave every unnecessary battle in Your hands. Let me truly learn from You and find rest for my soul. In Jesus' powerful Name I pray, Amen!

Get out now, while you still can!
