The Counsel That Will Stand

Proverbs 19:21 says; ”There are many plans in a man's heart, nevertheless the Lord's counsel—that will stand."

We all make plans. We dream about the future, set goals, and seek to chart the course of our lives. Planning is not wrong—in fact, wisdom often calls us to prepare diligently. Yet Proverbs reminds us of a greater reality: while our hearts may be filled with many plans, it is ultimately the counsel of the Lord that stands forever.

This is not a discouraging truth but a deeply comforting one. Our loving heavenly Father did not send His only Son to redeem us, only to leave us to navigate life alone. Such a thought is unthinkable. Through Jesus Christ, we have been purchased at the highest price and now belong to Him.

As Paul reminds us, "You are not your own... for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

Because we belong to Him, we can be confident that He has a purpose for our lives. God never saves us without also calling us.

Ephesians 2:10 declares that we are "His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." 

Long before we were aware of His plan, He had already prepared a path for us to follow. Nor does God simply reveal His will and then leave us to accomplish it in our own strength.

Philippians 2:12–13 assures us that while we are to work out our salvation with reverence and obedience, "it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." 

He not only gives us the work to do ... but also provides both the desire and the power to accomplish it.

Even before our birth, God was carefully shaping us for His purposes. Psalm 139 celebrates His intimate knowledge of us, declaring that He formed us in the womb and ordained all our days before one of them came to be. The natural abilities, personality, and experiences He has woven into our lives are no accident. Then, at conversion, the Holy Spirit graciously bestows spiritual gifts upon every believer [1 Corinthians 12:1–11], equipping each one for service within the body of Christ.

Our natural talents and our spiritual gifts are not separate stories—they are wonderfully brought together by the Holy Spirit to enable us to fulfil the unique calling God has prepared for us. As we submit our plans to His wisdom and follow His leading, we discover that His counsel is always wiser than our own, His timing is always perfect, and His purposes are always good.

When our carefully laid plans are interrupted or redirected, we need not despair. Often, those very moments are evidence that the Lord is gently steering us toward His better purposes. His counsel will stand—not because He overrules us harshly, but because He lovingly leads His children into the fullness of His will.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank You that Your plans for my life are wise, loving, and perfect. Help me to surrender my own ambitions to Your counsel, and to trust You when my plans change. Thank You for creating me with unique abilities, and for equipping me with spiritual gifts through Your Holy Spirit. May my life always bring glory to You as I walk in the good works You have prepared for me. Teach me to rest in the confidence that Your counsel will always stand—that Your ways are higher than my own—that I should never lean on my own understanding, but always submit to Yours—You know what is good for me.
