A Little Bit More!

Proverbs 15:27 ... "He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live."

Greed rarely announces itself. It often begins as the simple desire for a little bit more — a little more security, a little more success, a little more comfort.

When this "little bit more" satisfies our soul — and we are not careful, then the pursuit of a "little bit more" can start to rule our hearts, and quietly reshapes our priorities. Before long, money becomes more important than relationships, and ambition takes the place of love.

Here, Proverbs warns us that greed does not simply affect the individual; it troubles the whole household.

Families often bear the hidden cost of an unchecked desire for gain. Long hours at work, constant striving for financial success — those "little foxes that spoils the whole vine" [Song of Solomon 2:15]. The relentless pursuit of possessions can leave little time or energy for those who matter most. Children may receive expensive gifts, but miss the far greater gift of a parent's presence, love and guidance.

Sadly, the "little bit more", leaves a mark on the soul ... it is called greed. Greed has divided many families through disputes over money and inheritance over centuries. I’ve heard this saying, "Where there's a will, there are relatives" — and this more than often reflects the painful reality that the love of money can expose selfishness, and fracture even the closest relationships within the family structure.

God is not against hard work or wise stewardship, as a matter of fact, He is for it. Scripture speaks of diligence and responsible planning. But what God warns against; is allowing the pursuit of wealth — that "little bit more," to become the master of our lives. Jesus reminded His followers, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21).

A home is strengthened not by what it owns, but by the love, integrity and faith that fills it. When we choose contentment over greed, and generosity over selfish ambition, we create an environment where relationships flourish, and God's peace is evident!

I am sure that this scripture from Proverbs speaks with remarkable relevance to many hearts today. It's easy to think greed is only about large sums of money ... greed speaks of a heart condition. Contentment, generosity, and integrity are the antidotes to this subtle pull of greed.

PRAYER:

Father, I come to You in the powerful Name of Jesus Christ. I pray that You guard our hearts against the temptation of greed. Money can buy “things”, but it cannot buy love. And You say in Your word, if we do not have love, we are like a resounding gong — a clanging cymbal [1 Corinthians 13:1]. So help us to value our families and our friends above possessions. Help us to seek first Your kingdom, rather than earthly gain. May our homes be known not for what we own, but for the love, generosity, and faith that honour You. Amen.
