True Discipleship : Rooted in Christ, Growing as Disciples!

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” — Colossians 2:6-7 NKJV

When Jesus walked this earth, He chose not simply to preach the Kingdom message on His own. He chose to build a ministry that would last through the ages.

He selected twelve ordinary men, spent time with them, taught them, answered their questions, and showed them how to live according to God’s will. That is what discipleship looks like — one person walking alongside another, helping them grow in their faith.

Paul writes in Colossians 2:6-7 NKJV — As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”

Paul is saying something very simple here. You have come to faith in Jesus — now keep

going. Keep learning. Keep growing.

New Christians need that kind of help. Coming to faith is a wonderful thing, but it is just the start of the journey. A new believer needs someone to walk with them, to answer their questions, to open the Bible with them, and to show them how to pray. That is what it means to disciple someone.

Jesus modelled this perfectly. He took His disciples through everyday moments — a storm on a lake, a conversation with a stranger, a meal at the table — and He used each one to teach them something about God. He was patient. He was kind. He kept showing them the way, even when they were slow to understand.

We are called to do the same. Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2 NKJV — “The things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

That is four generations of discipleship in one verse — Paul to Timothy, Timothy to faithful men, faithful men to others.

When we disciple a new Christian, we are not just being helpful. We are doing exactly what Jesus told us to do when He said in Matthew 28:19 NKJV — “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.”

Is there someone in your life who is new to faith? Walk with them. Share what you know. Help them grow. That is how the church gets stronger — one person at a time.
