What does it really mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
It’s more than just believing in Him, it’s about following Him, and helping others to follow Him. Jesus gave us clear instructions before He returned to heaven. He told His followers to go and make disciples of all nations. This wasn’t just for the twelve apostles. It’s a calling for every believer!
Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV … Jesus said: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.Being a disciple starts with learning from Jesus. Reading God’s Word and talking with Him in prayer, it’s about instigating a change in ourselves, becoming more like Him, and helping others to do the same. We learn how He lived, how He loved people, and how He obeyed the Father. Just like an apprentice learns from a mentor, we learn from His example.
But discipleship doesn’t stop with you and I. Jesus said to make disciples, not just be disciples. This means we’re called to invest our time and knowledge in others, sharing what we’ve learned and helping them to grow in their faith. It might be a friend, a family member, a co-worker, or someone at church. As disciples, we teach them to follow Jesus just as we’re learning to follow Him.
Making disciples happens in everyday life, over coffee, in conversations, through serving together. It’s inviting someone to church, praying with a struggling friend, or showing patience toward someone, being humble not harsh.
The beautiful part of this calling is that we’re never alone in it. Jesus promised to be with us always, even to the end of the age. When we feel inadequate or overwhelmed by the task, we can rest in His assurance that He is with us.
He’s not asking us to do this in our own strength.
True discipleship is a lifetime journey of following Jesus, bringing people into the light, sharing the gospel and encouraging them to grow in their faith. It’s about standing alongside a brother or sister in Christ, and helping each other to understand Gods word and God’s will for our lives.
Thank You Jesus for teaching us, that we may also teach others
