True Discipleship : Becoming like Christ

Formed in Christ (Transformation & Maturity)

Romans 8:29: "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.”

There is a word in Scripture that stops me every time I read it—CONFORMED.

Shaped from the inside out, transformed into the very image of Jesus Christ. This is God's great purpose for every believer—that we would become like His Son, changed at every level of who we are.

Transformation is a massive task where we are battling the old to bring in the new, changing our old habits and worldly behaviour. Paul makes this unmistakably clear:

Romans 12:2: "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

God begins with transforming the mind and the heart, with the hidden places no one else sees. Christ-like character is the fruit of a life surrendered daily to the Holy Spirit. Ask yourself this question: is the person you are in private the same person who walks through the church door on Sunday? Genuine transformation produces consistency — what you see is what you get, through and through. If your character, which is the ‘real’ you, is different to the Church you, then the transforming work of the Holy Spirit is not yet complete.

Rooted and Grounded

A tree with shallow roots will blow over in the storm. God calls us to have deeper roots.

Colossians 2:6-7: "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith."

To be rooted in Christ means making the Word of God and prayer the daily architecture of your life. Daily feeding of your mind with Scripture. Continual communion with God in prayer. The believer who is grounded this way stands firm when pressure comes, because their foundation is in Christ Himself. When difficulties arise, pray for Gods help; when others are in need, pray for God to assist them; when times are good, be grateful for the blessings and thank God in prayer.

The Anatomy of a Disciple

Maturity in Christ is shaped by three things working together: obedience, repentance, and perseverance.

James 1:4: "But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

Obedience is a daily submission saying yes, Lord, Your way is better than my way!—choosing God's way wholeheartedly. Repentance is the willingness to return — coming back to Christ quickly and honestly when we fall short as we often do. Perseverance is the refusal to quit pressing forward through difficulty, through doubt, through the long stretches where growth feels slow.

These three are woven together in the life of every maturing disciple. And all of it is made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit working within you.

Formation in Christ is the work of a lifetime — often slow, always purposeful. God, who began this good work in you, is faithful to complete it. Be patient and persevere to the end. Look forward to hearing those beautiful words: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 NKJV.

Philippians 1:6: "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
